Glen Waverley Secondary College
Glen Waverley Secondary College (GWSC) is a high performing Government co-educational school in Melbourne's south-east. The College prides itself on academic excellence while also ensuring students' achievements in sporting, music and the arts are recognised and celebrated. Beginning at the GWSC at the start of 2017, I quickly immersed myself in the academic and co-curricular pursuits of the school, constantly seeking out opportunities to support the wide range of programs on offer to our students.
Year 12 English (2018)
- Working within an experienced team of educators, I plan, implement and assess a differentiated course that supports my class’ attainment of Study Design skills and knowledge in preparation for internal and external assessment as well as literacy needs beyond school.
Year 11 English (2017 and 2018)
- Teaching two classes in 2017 has enabled me to differentiate my content and approaches while my 2018 class allows me to further develop my methodology in this subject, to the benefit of my students.
Year 10 Public Speaking and Issues (2018)
- As the sole teacher of this elective program, I am able to develop and implement the course with greater autonomy, supporting students’ oral presentation skills and awareness of persuasive language and argument.
Year 8 English (2017 and 2018)
- Teaching a diverse range of students, I develop and plan engaging units to support students’ learning at a diverse range of levels in line with the Victorian Curriculum.
Year 7 Italian (2018)
- I planned and developed units to support the language and intercultural learning of students both new to the Italian language and with prior experience. Reflecting the needs of these diverse learners, I worked to differentiate my course to better support the individual growth of each.
Tournament of Minds (2017 and 2018)
- Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem-solving program for multi-aged teams of students who work together to solve a demanding, open-ended Long-Term Challenge. The team must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge on Tournament Day. I took on the role as facilitator for the college’s teams, supporting the 2017 team as the college’s first to become state finalists. In 2018, I also nominated as a judge while supporting two teams in the Arts and Social Sciences divisions of the tournament.
Camps (2017-2018)
- Each year at GWSC, I have attended camps with junior students, developing rapport with learners both in my classes and across the college.
Senior School Mentoring Program (2018)
- I mentor two year 12 students outside class, working to support their wellbeing and engagement throughout the challenging experience of VCE.
Author Visits (2017)
- In my first year at the college I coordinated visits by professional authors to support the English syllabus at years 7, 8 and 9, furthering students’ creative writing skills and complementing their study of core texts.
Senior School Study Hall (2017)
- This program targeted students in need of additional support to achieve their learning outcomes while also instilling study and organisation strategies.
